2K - Collaboration: From Sea to Shore by way of the Drawing Board

Moderator:

John K Hanson Jr., President, Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors

John Hanson founded the award-winning Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine in Camden, Maine, where it was published for 22 years before moving to Rockland in the fall of 2009. The publication also produces an annual in-water boat and home show in Rockland during the second weekend of August, now heading into its eighth year, and a well received website (maineboats.com) that complements the other products and provides original content as well.  One mission of his company is to present Maine’s proud artisans—boatuilders, furniture makers, artists, architects, and other creative workers--to the rest of the country and the world. Hanson has served on the boards of the Maine Marine Trades Association and Searsport’s Penobscot Marine Museum.

He then went on to study and teach boatbuilding. After this he returned to Connecticut to apprentice with an old-school craftsman in house construction and historic renovations. Patric Santerre, Principal, ARCADIA designworks

Patric Santerre is a Maine native who spent his early life in the “forest island” community of Millinocket. Living between town and “the lake,” Patric had plenty of time to explore nature and was less interested in a formal art and design education until departing Maine in 1979 for Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. After a year of computer science he discovered, and was quickly dedicated, to the study of art, theatre and architecture. He continued his studies of Art & Design at Virginia Polytechnic Institute receiving a 5 year professional degree in architecture and producing a sizeable collection of steel sculpture. After a brief return to Maine in the late 80’s, Patric met his wife, artist/designer C.M. Bard and together they embarked on a challenging life inside the Washington DC beltway. After 4 years of developing a domestic portfolio for an international architecture and engineering firm, and drawing and sculpting at night, they moved to Urbana, Illinois where Patric earned a Master’s Degree in Industrial Design at the University of Illinois. During 4 years in the Midwest plains, Patric gained
invaluable insights to product design, teaching as an assistant professor, and how to express and document his imagination using digital Cadd, audio and video editing software. Patric has been back in Portland, Maine since 1998 where he is helping raise their children and making award winning architecture and product design at ARCADIA designworks a multi-faceted design firm that he co-founded with Ms. Bard.

Stuart “Mac” Ferris, Lyman Morse

Stuart “Mac” Ferris joined Lyman Morse as the Cabinet Shop foreman in 1995.  Prior to coming to Maine, Mac ran a high end carpentry business in Colorado specializing in high end residential and commercial construction 24 years.  He is passionate about period furniture and architecture, particularly American and English styles, and is recognized for his beautifully hand carved pieces found in Lyman Morse’s boats.  His expertise in fine construction recently helped the company expand into the home building and remodeling business, where he has overseen 3 large scale projects in the last 2 years.
