4D - Maine Clean and Green Technologies

Moderator:

Jake Ward, Assistant VP of Research, Economic Development and Governmental Affairs, University of Maine

Jake Ward is the assistant vice president of the University of Maine, Research, Economic Development and Government Relations.  The Office of Research and Economic Development acts as the liaison office for business and industry, supporting economic development with the assistance of University of Maine resources.  The department also acts as the University technology transfer office, handling patenting, licensing, and commercialization activities for the University of Maine.   The University of Maine averages 10 new patent applications per year 2-3 new technology licenses, 2-3 new spin-off companies and hundreds of joint R&D projects with existing companies.  Mr. Ward is a member of many national organizations including the Association of University Technology Mangers, the National Council of University Research Administrators, the National Business Incubation Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.  He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Ocean Engineering from the University of New Hampshire.

Ron Defoe, Safety and Environment Manager, Lyman Morse

Ron Defoe has been the Environmental, Health, and Safety and Facilities Manager at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding Company in Thomaston, Maine for the past 7 years. He currently serve on the Maine Marine Trades Association Board ,  the Marine Systems Training Center Board,  and the Clean Marinas Board.

Susan Mackay, President, Zeomatrix

Susan MacKay is President and CEO of Zeomatrix, LLC, an advanced materials company focused on Clean Technology.  During her career Susan has worked as an independent consultant, in research and development for 3M Corporation, and in product development for Physical Electronics, Inc.  Susan received her B.S. in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from The University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill.  She has prior experience in technical marketing, as a Q90s team leader (3M internal quality improvement program), and has co-authored over 20 scientific publications. 

John Ferland, Director of Project Development, Ocean Renewable Power Company

John M. Ferland is Vice President – Project Development for ORPC Maine LLC, a tidal energy technology and project development company affiliated with the Ocean Renewable Power Company. He is responsible for project development activities in New England and eastern Canada. Mr. Ferland formerly was President & CEO of the private, non-profit Maine Center for Enterprise Development (MCED), the oldest technology commercialization center in the Maine. He was also the founding president/CEO of the Environmental & Energy Technology Council of Maine. Before leading the MCED and E2 Tech, Mr. Ferland was general manager & CEO of Clean Casco Bay, Inc., an oil spill response company created through Portland Pipe Line Corp. and funded by five oil terminal operators in Portland Harbor.  He is a graduate of the University of Maine and has a Master of Marine Affairs degree from the University of Rhode Island.

Mike Bilodeau, Director, Process Development Center
 
Mike Bilodeau is currently the Director of the Process Development Center , which is part of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at the University of Maine .  Mike is also the Industrial Liaison for the Forest Bioproducts Research Initiative at the University of Maine .  Mike is responsible for administrating about $1 million dollars of industrial research contracts annually.  Prior to joining the University of Maine in 2003, Mike worked in research and development and corporate engineering for a major paper company for nearly 20 years.  Mike received a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maine in 1983.
